Adult Coloring Books – The Next Big Thing!

adult-coloring-booksHave you ever fallen asleep and when you awoke you found you’d missed out on something truly amazing? That’s exactly how I felt when I found out about adult coloring books. I was having dinner with best-selling author, Michelle Stimpson and a few other writers, when Michelle happened to mention she was about to publish her first adult coloring book. “Adult what?” I said, thinking I’d heard wrong.

Reading my expression and interpreting it correctly as bewilderment, Michelle explained how adult coloring books were all the rage now, and that she was about to release her first entitled, Coloring the Scriptures. She went on to say that if I were to walk into a Barnes and Noble I’d probably see a huge display of adult coloring books couched between the new releases and best sellers.

Well, I did exactly as she suggested. I went to Barnes and Noble to see for myself if this adult coloring book thing was as big as she said. And guess what? It is!

adult-coloring-books-barnes-and-noble First of all, when I opened to doors to Barnes and Noble and crossed the threshold, there was a display of adults coloring books to my left. And as I walked further into the store, I saw a huge display of adult coloring books, with an array of designs in the center of the store near the front.

What I discovered as I perused a selection of books, is that adult coloring books are not your children’s coloring books of yesteryear. They are far more intricate and complex, featuring, animals, birds, butterflies, mandalas, mosaics, stained glass, floral, geometric designs, and others.

Needless to say, I was quite surprised how this trend had quietly sneaked into popular culture without a lot of us — or maybe just me — noticing.

After seeing hundreds of books on display at Barnes and Noble, I became curious about how popular this trend really was, so when I got home, I googled it. In addition to there being hundreds of adult coloring books on sale through various outlets, there are a few articles touting the benefits of adult coloring books.

According to, “Everyone from researchers at John Hopkins University to editors of Yoga Journal are suggesting coloring as an alternative to meditation.” The article stated:

• Coloring has therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus or bring about more mindfulness.

• Like meditation coloring allows the brain to switch off other thoughts and focus.

Adult coloring books are topping the best seller lists, occupying spots in the top 20. And though they were first introduced in 2012 and 2013, Neilsen Bookscan, a data provider estimates that more than 2000 coloring books were published in 2015, up from 300 in 2014.

The popularity of the trend has spawned coloring parties and clubs where grown-ups get together to color and socialize. Sounds good to me!

So the next time you feel the urge to doodle, or if you’re feeling stressed or anxious, grab some coloring books, a few coloring pencils, call up a few friends, and let the colors fly.

Not only will you feel better after coloring those tightly curved spirals, floras, or animal prints, you’ll have a brilliant masterpiece to boot. And who knows, if you’re the creative type, this could be your next best seller!
